Hello all, I took my son up to the Baltimore Whitman coin show today. He has been sick all week but swore he was feeling good enough to go....He was totally lying...but whatever, he had fun and I had fun showing him all the different cool world and U.S. coins. Over at the Kids Korner he was able to reach into a big treasure chest and pull a handful of coins out to keep. One of the coins he pulled out was this 1881 IHC. It is in a plastic case and has MS 64 RB written on it. I am not super familiar with the series so I thought I would ask you all for your sage advice. It will be staying in its case but I want to make sure it is something a 7 year old can keep in his room with his other coins or if it should maybe go in the safe, to be looked at on occasion. I think it is a beautiful coin regardless and he is already in love with it. Big thanks to whoever donated it to the treasure chest. Thanks for looking!
I'm not familiar with this series, either, but what makes you say it is AU? I don't see any evidence of wear on the coin at all. Chris
It's on the obverse, mostly. Though the feathers, the high points in the hair, bottom diamonds, tip of bust. On the reverse, the leaf detail our-left of bow is a little smooth. These are all high points.
FWIW, I just looked at the coin again through my loupe. Most of the points you mention as having wear are, I think, more due to my photography skills and not really wear. I will try to get a better picture.
If these aren't true representations of what you're seeing in-hand, that of course makes a big difference.
Now that’s a true treasure find! And I say it’s an awesome reward for a seven year old roughing out a sick day to go coin carousing with his pop. Certainly a keeper!
