1881 5$ grading question

    Unfortunately this one has a blemish (dent by the ear). What might it grade the way it is? What might it grade if it did not have the blemish?

    With that mark, it is considered damaged and is ungradable. Without it, it would probably be VF-30/35 ish. Either way, it's really only worth melt. That is the good thing about circulated common gold...there comes a point when damage really doesn't make much of a difference in value, because it can't go lower than melt.:kewl: Of course, this is assuming the coin is genuine. I'm not sure one way or the other from the pics.

    Of course it is damaged, but were it not, I'd have to agree with a vf obverse. However, the reverse is a little nicer, at least ef - so, I'd probable stick in a ring or something with the eagle showing. May get more for it that way.
