We picked up some interesting coins this week & are trying to figure out whether or not they're worth having regraded by PCGS. The main one that we're interested in is an 1880 Morgan graded by NCGS at MS66. I've been scanning through VAM's, but I'm still too new to this to understand what I'm looking for. On my coin, I see a blob on the reverse "G" in GOD... The "A" and "R" in DOLLAR appear to be doubled...The "L" in DOLLAR also seems to have a blob. The "S" in PLURIBUS also appears strange. The first 8 on the date looks odd. Here's the VAM list that I found http://www.vamworld.com/1880-P+VAMs , but none seem to mention these blob like issues. Any assistance is appreciated. I've tried several times to use my scanner to scan the coin in, but the plastic case seems to be causing a reflection issue. I'll post pics when I figure out a solution for that.
I've been noticing more and more. Adding pics now. This one is of the E which looks doubled. Several letters are like this. This pic is of the leaf which isn't attached. Blob like claws Ear is different (Hair is filled in and goes straight across instead of angled up) Blob in the "G"
The photo of the "E" is too blurry to tell. The "floating" leaf is common as a result of overpolishing the die. The talons are supposed to look like that, but sometimes the parallel ribs are worn down. The hair is intended to look like that, but yours has lost the detail probably from a weak strike. The filled die chip in the "G" is also common and is more often used as a marker. Chris
