I could use your collective help again.

I think I have 79/80 low 7 over first 8 (VAM6) variety 1880 CC GSA. Looking for confirmation that it is indeed a VAM6 and opinions of the overall grading (63+?).

Thank in advance for being so helpful.

It's not the VAM 6. It looks more like VAM 8

On the VAM 6 you would see much more of the underlying 7 inside the 8 and also the dash appears to high for the VAM 6.

    See VAM 8 here http://www.vamworld.com/1880-CC+VAM-8

    I would call it a MS63.

Beamer, the mark you see beneath the 2nd "8" is a dash that was placed on the die intentionally as a reference point for imprinting the 3rd & 4th digits onto the die with the logotype. This was necessitated by the transition from 1879 to 1880, when the "79" was ground out of the die, so they could line it up properly. The base of the 2nd "8" was supposed to be centered over the 10th denticle to the right of the neck vee and the only way they could be sure that the logotype was aligned correctly was by putting the dash below for visual reference. Sometimes these dashes were polished out of the die, and other times it wasn't. You can often find this dash on CC Morgans for any of the years 1880-1885.

Sorry, this isn't a VAM-6. In the VAM listing, the reference to the "low 7" means that you should be able to see the top crossbar of the "7" in the upper loop of the 2nd "8" and part of the vertical leg in the lower loop. You'll have to compare yours with the "dash" listings for the correct one.

    Chris

PS. I think it will grade MS64. The grading services are usually a little lenient on the GSA Morgans.
