Hi guys. I'm planning on heading over to a B&M in the big city tomorrow, and was wondering what y'all think I'll be offered for a Morgan of mine. It is graded EF-40 by ANACS, but I think it could grade anywhere from 35-45 depending on how you hold your tongue  The Redfield issue of (CoinWorld?) lists it at ~$800, but I have a feeling that I won't get that. Opinions? My camera's connector won't work otherwise I'd up a picture...
Don't be shocked if they offer you $80-$125 for it. If you can, I would try and sell it yourself on craigslist(no fees) and ask a reasonable retail price for it. The B&M, won't make an offer you'll like.
Another idea. Negotiate the price and grade and then take the result out in trade at the store. The dealer may like that better and you could get more coins with that option.
Why not just post it on eBay? They charge high (13-14% net on auctions including Paypal's take) fees, but you can list it for what you think is fair for free... as long as you do it in auction format.
1.) Because craigslist.com has no fees at all. 2.) craigslist.com has no buyer protection that a buyer can SNAD the transaction for stupid reasons. 3.) No shipping. 4.) Cash deals, no waiting for money to clear PayPal, no waiting for buyers to pull their head out of their rearend to make the payment. 5.) You can list All Sales Are Final, and Sold As Is, and it will stick. Just to name a few reason why not to list it on eBay.
There is a zero chance you will get full trends from any dealer. This would not surprise me either - depending on the shop, of course. That said, the only CDN I have with me is a few months old, but lists $550 bid/EF ($210 VF) and its doubtful that this has changed by any truly significant margin. Full EF bid from a B&M for this coin, especially while residing in ANACS plastic, is not going to happen. Assuming that the coin is not a total slug and is fairly graded, its a safe bet to expect an offer no higher than 30% back, but likely less to much less. If he's done a lot of business with the guy or the coin is particularly nice, things may be a little different, but the point is that if the OP is expecting anywhere near trends, he is wasting his time. Unless with dreck and/or widgets, any "dealer" who buys using the bluebook is (IMO) not worth one's time... nine times out of ten those who do are either hacks or wannabes. This is not to say that even straight guys will not sometimes offer in the same range, but as a legitimate reference, the book is useless.
