My Mother-In-Law gave my wife this coin asking her to have me look at it since she knows I collect. I am still not very good at grading, so I was wondering if someone here could give an opinion. I did look and I'm positive this is not the 1879/reverse of 1878 variety. It clearly has the slanted arrow feather. Still, the coin appears to be in fairly nice shape. Some bag marks, not sure if it was cleaned at one time. It's currently sealed in a hard-plastic holder and I didn't want to damage that since it's not my coin, so I had to take the pictures like that. Any comments are appreciated....
Has it been cleaned? Sort of looks like it in the photos. Also IMO the photos are not clear enough to accurately grade the coin,.
I don't know if it's been cleaned. It seems there might be some vertical lines/scratches in the field to the left of the obverse. Nothing stands out on the reverse other than bag marks from what I can see. I will try and get some more photos here... Hopefully this lighting is a bit better also.
Thanks...the first were just quick and dirty taken on our kitchen table with the overhead light. The 2nd set had indirect side lighting - I get better luck with that setup... Any further opinions are welcomed...
I love the blast white frost on that one I would say MS-64 (not cleaned, as far as I can see) How deep are the fields (would you call it semi-pl or pl?)
It is a very pretty coin. I do not consider myself enough of an expert to say proof-like or just semi-proof like.... I appreciate all the input!
Not a chance at 64. The scratches on the obverse in the fields are too prominent. I would say 63 at best. Nice and frosty, but significant marks, beyond bagmarks.
