I have been woundering what this coin may grade and if you can can you spare a grade yourself. I have bought a 1879-S morgan dollar for a fair price and was woundering the grade and if it was PL or DMPL. I know that it grades very high because it only has ONE nodicable contact mark and there is no wear. ---THANKYOU (if you gave a grade)...
Hard to tell from your pics . All it takes is one hit in the wrong area to bring a coin down a few points in MS grade . From your pics I'd hazard a MS-63 to MS-64 . Can you post some straight on pics without the glare . Looks like a nice coin though . Rusty
Looks like you have a 3rd reverse , is the brast uf the eagle rounded , or depressed ? To tell if it's proolike put it at a 90 degree angle to a newspaper and see if you can see the newspaper in the coin . How far it reflects will tell if it's prooflike or Deep mirror prooflike . Rusty
you could tell if it is the 2nd or 3rd reverse by the arow feathers too 2nd reverse the arow feathers point sraight 3rd reverse the arow feather points upward just like mine.
A little help with the grade for this coin. might not be the best pictures, but they should be some what good enough. The coin also grades about 1 or 2 grades high in MS in person then with a pic. -- thanks for the help -----K2Coins
Was going to say that it looked artificial. Buying raw coins is huge risk. I say "buy the coin, and get the benefit of the holder."
it was not that it was artificial, there were light scratches below the chin and that is what i think that the cleaning was on the front, other then that there were very few marks.
It's not just under the chin. There are scratches all over the fields as well, and definitely looks improperly cleaned. Correct label for it.
But what you don't understand, is it only takes one side to be improperly cleaned for the TPG to give it a DETAILS label, and if the damage from the cleaning is extensive enough.
"Huge" risk? For some, yes, but for everyone, no. I say "DON'T buy the coin unless you know what you're doing, regardless of the holder."
I can't read the datwe on that Photograph. Does your camera have a focus or a thumb print on the lens?
