I almost feel bad about this. My wife was at work today and a lady came in and spent this on soda. My wife doesn't know that much about coins, but she knows if it is unusual to grab it and bring it home. She also used a very low grade 1917 Mercury dime. Anyway, do you think it might be worth more than melt? 103_1143.jpg 103_1144.jpg

Sorry about the pics, I couldn't get real great lighting. It has been cleaned too, I am sure.

Gotta say melt as well, but one thing we can't tell from the pic is if it has any varieties/VAMS. Look up some VAMs for 1879 and check for them.

    Overall nice find, Greg. ecstaticbanana_smilie.gif

I was pretty sure it was worth melt, but figured I would post it just in case. I just couldn't believe someone would spend it at face.

  6. Don't feel bad, after all, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." I wish people used Morgans where I work...

That women could have bought 12 cases of soda with that coin :(

Roughly speaking it looks to be about XF-AU condition, which makes it worth about $43-$45 retail. My guess is that the lady has more where that one came from.

But, it's cleaned rendering any condition bumps as to value, worthless. Melt, unless he can find any Varieties on it.
