1878 seven tail feathers???

    Picked this up today for spot price out of a gold recycling shop, the owners had no interest in coins just scrap gold. I think its a seven tail feathers variety but I am no expert? Was just wondering how i did and possible grade and value would be nice also.

    The long scratch between ONE DOLLAR is on the holder not the coin.

    counted the feathers, and it's definitely 7. hehe :yes:

    About that. I'll leave it to the experts here. But since you're holding the coin, try to check this out and compare them here:

    It looks to me like it had been harshly cleaned at some point. It would only be worth melt value for me.

    FWIW, most of the coins I've seen in stores that buy gold for melt have almost always been common-date, problem coins. I wouldn't waste my time (or money) for coins like this.

    Melt is what i paid for it, i figured i wasnt getting a deal at one of those places but figured i would ask. Thanks again chris.

    I'll go for an XF grade. being 1st year is cool, most go for a couple bucks (or more)over spot.

    Definitely looks like a 7TF Variety.
