Is it me, or is that a little pricey? https://www.moderncoinmart.com/1878...ontent=20210916_w_1878_P_morgan_silver_dollar
Why are Morgan dollars called 7 over 8 tail feathers? The 7 over 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollars or 7/8 TF as they are called came into existence because of an economic move to reuse the earlier 8 TF dies. All the 8 TF dies were modified to show 7 Tail feathers. But the underlying 8 feathers still showed through.
Current guide on all three varieties is $55.00-$60.00 in XF 40, so yes, maybe a bit high at $80.00. The listing does not say which variety this is not a numerical grade so caveat emptor.
The 8TF can only be found in 1878 for Philly minted. For that year, you can find: For the 7 TF, you can find in rev of 78 or 79:
There are several different 7/8 TF die pairs because they made quite a few 8TF dies but only struck 750k coins with that design. Some of them experienced die polishing and became 7/3, 7/4 TF varieties with weak "hangnails". Bought a 7/4 TF VAM 41a a couple weeks ago for $42 (dealer marked it as a normal 7TF). Easily flipped it for $70.
