I just saw a Morgan dollar on Coin Country that looked like a good deal. I know there have been references to Coin Country and Coin Vault on another thread. I'm just wondering if it was as good of a deal as it looked. I'm a newbie. It was an 1878 8TF in a green NTC slab. It was labeled "1878 8TF MS64 DMPL". They were asking $600 but would have probably taken $500. The values I see in price guides are MUCH higher for DMPL. Does NTC grade accurately? Is it worth it? It didn't sell.
As has been said in many threads here - it is not wise to buy coins on TV - EVER ! Typically they are extremely overpriced. I would also recommend that unless you are very good at grading coins yourself - that you never buy a slabbed coin, from anyone, unless it is slabbed by NGC, ICG, ANACS or PCGS. And in my opinion - NTC does not grade accurately.
I've got the show on in the background. Trying to educate myself and work at the same time. I checked prices for about a dozen of their slabbed Morgans. They were NGC, PCGS, and NTC. Every coin was at least 50% over retail values I see listed. Many were twice as much. The only exception was this 1878 8TF MS64 DMPL. It was less than 1/4 of the listed value. I'm trying to figure out why they're selling it at 25% of the supposed value instead of 200% like the rest. Probably not a DMPL nor an MS64.
I heard NTC "reconditions" coins. They do that for the "good" of the coin. I can't see anything good about it! Anybody heard this? I am not impressed with NTC and like most of you, I only stay with the top four.
Okay, 1878 8TF MS-64 DMPL Greysheet bid $2550.00 So what grade do you think that you will get for $600
From what I've been reading about NTC, I'm not even sure I would get an 1878 coin. I'm not judging, just getting educated. Also, $600 is about $500 over my monthly coin budget! They do offer a 30 day no-questions-asked return policy. It's just strange that THEY didn't push the coin as a great deal... like the others. They must not have agreed with the grade on the slab.
