The coins in decent shape but the tail feathers on the right took a hit and flattened them. However you can easily see the 7 over 8 variety. What do you expect for this coin in this condition for less than $40.00?
For $40, that looks really nice. When I retired, I had a few coins left in my inventory. This 1878, 7 over 8 tailfeather dollar was one of them. It is graded MS-63. A dealer with questionable ethics offered me a low ball price on it telling me that it was over graded. He knew I was not that stupid, but he couldn't help himself. I passed and kept it. It's nicer than the one I have in this set, but I don't really want to crack it out for the set. I have had the "weak" and "strong" varieties of this coin. I think that there are over 50 varieties. Some of the "weak" pieces are really cool with doubling on the eagle's claws and the like. But, since the tailfeathers are not doubled, they bring a lot less money.
