Which do you feel is the nicer coin here, and why is 'Coin 1' not MS65? As a newbie, I think by far it is the first one. In coin 1 what do you think of the details of feathers headdress and the detail in the hair below the band? The wreath details are nice also on the reverse. It looks like a beautiful coin!! Compare with Coin 2, which is graded the same, but by PCGS. Coin 1: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?SaleNo=1121&LotIdNo=32003 Coins 2: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1114&Lot_No=2952 Input to help me learn please? Thanks!! Greg
They both look accurately graded to me. Coin #1 wasn't a 65 because of the hits on the obverse (look at the large photos that show the slab, as the hits don't show in the first group of photos). My advice, don't get caught up in strength of strike on 64 & 65 grades -- unless it is really weak, TPGs don't tend to mark down coins in this grade range for strike weakeness. In these grades, focus on luster and hits/rub. That will generally be the difference between these grades. All IMHO & hoping this helps...Mike
p.s. Also, be VERY carefuly, trying to make grade judgements from photographs (much less the crappy Heritage photographs). Try and only draw conclusions from coins you see in-hand, as photographs are difficult -- even in the best of circumstances -- to grade from.
Leadfoots right to be careful making judgements from pictures , a slight angle difference can hide many hits both large and small , lighting is another big factor , why do you think they have whole books out written on how to take good representive pictures of coins . rzage
In regards to coin one: Wow, yeah from looking at the slab picture it sure shows them much more. Still a nice coin though!
