Hi everyone- just picked up collecting again after many years off. I've been reading the forum the past few days and I think I'm addicted! Anyway, I've been doing a lot of research, and I think I'm ready to buy the "big" 2. I'm pretty sure sure these are authentic, but what do you guys think? Any help would be appreciated- thanks in advance!
I think so- but I'm always a little suspicious, especially when I can't see the entire slab. And, as you know, there are fake slabs out there nowadays! I'll find out for sure on Monday when I call the company. The coins look real to me based upon my admittedly limited experience. Your thoughts?
I can't speak to the indian head,as I don't know enough about them, but the SVDB looks authentic to me. If they're in one of the top TPGs (PCGS,NGC,ANACS,SEGS) you can be pretty confident the coins are authentic. As long as you're buying from a reputable dealer that allows returns you shouldn't have any problems.
I agree. But, I think the reverse of the "09 SVDB" looks a lot better than F-12. Just my opinion. Even though it has the hit in front of the brow and the mark on the hairline. Bruce
I agree on the 09-SVDB the reverse does look nicer and would probably drive a bump to VF on the coin.
I would think that S VDB is at least a 15 and would likely go to 20. There is way too much detail for a 12. The 1877 would go 6, IMHO, and possibly an 8 because of the date.
Thanks for the opinions guys- I think I'm going to buy them. This completes my Lincoln cent and IHC collections! Pretty good feeling. Now, all I need is a Buffalo nickel 1913-s Type 2 to complete my buffalo collection and the 3 mercury dime "keys" to complete that one. What do you guys think about then moving on to Liberty nickels and Peace Dollars? I have a few examples of each coin, and I always liked their design. Are these difficult sets to put together in average to above average grades?
I like the IHC. The lincoln has the appearance, from the photos, of recoloring (worn coin, even chocolate brown color). IMO of course.
Lincoln VF-20, the two sides have worn differently....strange. Where would you be buying this coin from?
The 77 Indian looks real because the n in one is supposed to be weak and the will be strong on a proof. Even a proof can be well worn according to Richard Snow.
The 9 S VDB needs to be looked at with a strong glass because altered from a 1909 VDB are made when an S is cut from any Lincoln of the right shade and either glued or soldered to a plain Lincoln . The easiest way to check is with Assetone pollish remover. The soldered ones will have off shade at theedges of the S.
I think they both look authentic. Nice coins! Not exactly where I'd cut my collecting teeth, but nice coins!
