Nice snuff box on the bay! Excuse my ignorance on this subject but what the heck is snuff? Never mind, I found the answer, had to google it! :D Anyways, nicest box Ive ever come across on the bay as they're usually all broken up or tore down. Anyone know who made these for the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Expo? Probably a highly reputable company at the time, I'm sure it wasn't an imported item but you never know. Anyone know?

possibly Gorham made it. They didn't show all of the sides. If it is
"Sterling", surely they would have mentioned that fact in the
    description and showed the hallmarks.

In reality, the snuff of the 1800s was made from dried tobacco. A mortar and pestle was used to grind the tobacco into a substance fine enough to suck up a person’s nose.
