I can buy this coins for about $55. As a VG10 - which is where I have it - that's just OK. Any chance it could go F12? Unfortunately, the pics are all I have to go by. There are issues. The rim scrape on the obverse, for one. The gunk on the reverse looks like it *might* come off in an acetone bath? I guess there's just something kind of romantic about both 1876 and CC. Thanks.
Regardless what it would grade I don't think it's worth the cost of having it graded so really it shouldn't come down to "would it make F12" and instead should come down to "do I like this coin for $55?". If yes then go for it IMO
I’ve always understood SLQ to mean Standing Liberty Quarter. I guess it’s ambiguous though. As for this example, it’s hard to say from these photos. Too easy to miss potential problems.
I just rattled off the "SLQ" and then later thought, wait a minute... SLQ already belongs to something else... I guess the date clarifies...
@IBASD: excellent point! @USCC42: agreed - that dark smudge on the right obverse, for instance, looks suspicious
If long term value is important to you then better to hold off on this one. It would be better save a little more to put toward a problem free example. I agree that is an 'OK' price - probably would be graded at least F12 if problem free, but the cleaning, stains and scratch marks take off 50 -75% of value. Collector's Corner lists two each of VG8, VG10 and F12, plus three F15, all certified and essentially problem-free for not a lot more money.
