http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131252&lotNo=24725#Photo I am not an expert on the issue but I believe the current coin in the Heritage auction is the variety I listed in the title. Walter Breen lists it as: 3875 1875 S "$ variety." Very scarce Obvious extra serifs at top and bottom of S simulating ends of vertical line in $. Mintmark first entered leaning crazily to 1., then corrected. If you look at the large picture of the mintmark it appears to match the description. I also think it is too clear to be the filled S and the lines extending keep it from being the clear S. Does anyone else know of this variety and can you confirm it?
I am aware of the variety, but I can't seem to blow up the image large enough to make it out. But Breens description of the look of the mintmark is very accurate.
Sure looks like it at the bottom of the S. Can't tell much about the top. I worry some about what Breen called "very scarce" when he wrote the book. May have changed up or down over time.
