I tried this one a couple of times, and finally found the option to post a new thread. Hopefully someone can offer a nuetral opinion. I recently purchased an 1873 gold dollar at auction. It was part of a piece of jewelry, and consequently holed at the top. Anyway, upon examination of the coin, it appeared to be an 1878. When I put it under magnification, I found it to be an 1873. It seems to me that its a closed 3, but pictures I have found on the web are confusing..... some open 3's appear closed, and some closed 3's seem open. I am looking for an unbiased opinion. see attached picture...45X magnification on the date.
It is not a closed 3. See below - http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/UserImages/1873 Gold Dollar Reverse Comparison 1054x532.jpg
Thanks so much, the pictures you posted are the best examples I have seen. What the heck, it was a bit of wishful thinking on my part, but I am still happy with the coin. Thanks again, your feedback is appreciated!:hail:
