Could someone help me please? What's the difference between an open and a closed 3? I just picked up an 1873 $2.50 Liberty closed 3 NGC MS 62, and was wondering if someone could educate me a little about this variety. Thanks.

    Alf:
The numeral where the ends of the 3 meet are closer together on the closed 3.
The design was changed because they (the mint) felt that, with wear, the number would start to resemble an 8.

I hope that this helps a bit.

Thanks Treashunt it does. I was doing a little research after I bought it and originally I thought that the ends of the 3"s moved horizontally, but now realize that the closing is vertical. It'll be a nice addition to my collection.
