Gentlemen, here are some pictures of my 1872 CC quarter. Please let me have your "blunt" opinions on its grade. It was bought as "virtually fine" from a Stacks auction. But i guess i am lacking enough in depth knowledge of the englich language to understant what "virtually" means in this context. Is it a good VG or a fine? The overall appearance of the seated liberty figure is a bit weak, but the word LIBERTY is almost entirely visible. Is this what i should go by to call it VG or fine? The obverse is a bit stronger. A nice coin to behold at any rate. Thank you all for your comments. Eduard
It looks like a Fine to me, in terms of wear, but it also appears to have been cleaned. The latter is based on the coin being too light in color for one that has been circulated to that extent and the sheen looks unnatural, as well.
I agree with Mark, by detail is is a solid Fine but the cleaning would result in a lower net grade, possibly VG-8.
looks like it has F-12 details but with the cleaning that knocks it down to a VG-8. nice quarter! :kewl:
Eduard, I agree with the other posters! The coin is definitely a a solid Fine but would get downgraded to a VG-08 or VG-10 due to the cleaning. Nice coin and thanks for sharing! By the way, virtually in English means praktisch in German. There are a lot of different meanings for virtually in the English language but here are a few: almost, practically, as good as, same as, almost entirely, for all practical purposes, etc. .... Frank
Thank you guys, thank you Frank! you know, i was thinking "Virtually" had something to do with cinema (like virtual movies or so). Now i know what it means: almost, but not quite.. As for the coin, yes, i think also that it has been cleaned, even if this was not mentioned in the Stacks catalogue. In general i have a hard time determining when a coin has been cleaned. Sometimes of course it is really obvious, but other times it just escapes me. For example: i have an 1874-S quarter labelled ANACS AU - Cleaned net EF. On the other hand i have an 1841 O quarter, ANACS AU. Well, the 1841 O looks cleaned to me, even if the slab does not mention it, and the 1874 -S has a nice brown patina, i never would have thought it had been cleaned. Go figure! Have a good day everybody! Eduard
