Liberty barely visible from the pictures. Looks cleaned. Details coin is my opinion. The reverse's eye appeal is great!

It's a proof. Hairlines, but the TPG companies still grade these PR61

    MS 61

To me it looks prooflike as the rims aren't what one would expect on a proof coin and the details are weak in areas like the shield (especially where "Liberty" is almost worn).

MS64 (assuming proof-like with die polish lines). I don't think you would show us a details coin, so the obverse lines are probably die polish lines. A proof would not show die polish lines, so I guess proof-like. MS64 is a WAG.

I thought that about the rims also but it really has frosty devices.

I was gonna give it 24 hours, but here goes. We were all over the board on this one, but, IMO, it's a good example of how difficult it is to give a coin an honest grade. When I first looked at the coin, I thought, "cleaned". BTW, this beautiful pl coin sold recently in Baltimore for $1,998 and is for sale at a well known "rare and certified" dealer for $4,250...and they are showing it as 5 out of 5 for eye appeal... a 1871 obv.jpg a 1871 rev.jpg

Looking at the PCGS CoinFacts page, it appears that the weakness in liberty is part of the strike as their MS 68 example seems to have the same issue.

Based on the $2,000 auction price, either the market is weak for this material at this time (greysheet is $3,000) or the bidders felt it was overgraded (or everyone missed out on a bargain).
