Found this one in a shop for melt given the scratched date... Can anyone help me ID the likely date - my mind wants to say 1873...lol... the space in the last number doesnt look even like an 8, so its either a 3, 5 or 6...but i almost see the top part of a 3 in the scratches...again I know its prob not...
i cant see any, and the scratches look old, so I am almost hoping that someone scratched it off to take it out of the mint in 1873, because those scratches are not fresh I think it was said that 12600 were minted and the thought is that they all got melted...trying to see if I can get the width off of the last diget...but I am sure you all have more experience than me in that...
just looking like the date width across the whole coin is more narrow...there is a little slant up on base of ms liberty on the 75 that the width of the 5 to the right almost lines up with...the 3 it lines up quite a bit farther left... the 1 also lines up more with the point of the shield in the 73 as well as opposed to farther right of the tip of the shield in the 75...aaarrrghhhh, i know its not, but it sure is weird... and a steeper angle on the toes - more flat point in the 73
here is the back the only thing I can center on is the placement of the CC - more to the left and farther apart in the 73 of course the cc looks lower in the 73 vs 75...aaarggghh
Mill the obverse smooth and make a love token out of it. Then carry it in your pocket for about eight to nine months to remove the shine. That would increase its desirability and value.
Is a 1875 cc I'm 99.9995% sure the lower last digit doesn't have the front up curl that a 3 would have still your talking about my no 1 dream coin here!!
I don't know what the date is but I can say it is definitely NOT 1873, or 4. All of the 1871, 2, 3, and 4 coins from CC were struck using the same reverse die. In 1872 it developed a die crack from the right ribbon down through the mintmark. The crack appears on about a quarter of the 1872's and all of the 73's and 74's. This coin does not have that crack. You can see enough of the base of the last digit to eliminate the 1, 2, 4, and 7. that leaves 5, 6, and 8 as possibilities. In 1876 there were some slight changes made and new master hubs were put into use. This coin has the first hub design reverse so that eliminates 1878. So it is either a 75 or a 76.
