1869 Standard Silver 25¢ Pattern, PCGS PR64CAM

    you know how when you see acoin and it just strikes you like a bolt of lightning. i was messin around on ebay and found this. i think this is an awesome awesome coin....

    Nice coin pog ;) But the collection of pattern coinage is a whole other world. Not only were patterns struck in small numbers - they were not supposed to be released to the public either. So even fewer of them survive today. That's what makes them so expensive. At least US patterns.

    Now if beautiful designs and the idea of pattern coinage truly appeals to you - I would suggest that you check out the world coinage patterns. They are just as rare - if not more so than US designs. But they are a fraction of the cost. And you know what - you'll also find a great similarity in the designs as well ;)

    Here's an example - compare this to the reverse of the coin you mentioned.

    Liberty - Equality - Brotherhood

    That is a French 5 franc pattern struck in 1848. This particular example was struck in copper - but there are several other designs for the year struck in silver and white metal as well. The coin is certified and slabbed by NGC - MS64. Care to guess the price ?

    i was just thinking. ya know its a good thing that some people took the time out to preserve these coins the way they are. think of everything that we would have missed or maybe some of the thing that we did miss?????????

    That's why - as it has been said here before - we are not the owners of the coins we collect. We are merely the temporary caretakers ;) For somewhere down the line - there will be another who owns the very same coins you own today. And if you cherish them and care for them - and preserve their condition - these new owners will enjoy them just as much as you do. And so will the next, and the next, and the next ;)

    The vast majority of all coins I purchase I find right from the comfort of my own home - on the internet. Yeah you guessed it - most of them on ebay ;) This particular coin though I found on a dealer's web site. But I found the dealer's site by looking at the coins they offered on ebay.

    The power of the internet is truly vast - all you have to do is use it. Not only to find coins - but to find knowledge about the coins; or anything else for that matter.

    The rooster has been a symbol used by the French nation since the middle ages. It has figured prominently on many of their coins - like this one -

    I too am a sucker for the early pattern coins of that era. Check out my avatar which is an 1859 J-241 half dollar in PR64. Beautiful coin, which I had not sold it (the woes of being a dealer I guess).

    There were only two better examples of this coin certified by PCGS out of a total of 42 known. Like the quarter from this thread, the half dollar in my Avatar was a pattern for a coin that was never produced which is a darn shame in my opinion.

    Ah, yes. The French 20 Franc "Gold Rooster" is one of my favorite coin designs.

    The fields, especially behind Liberty's head, and between words of the legend, show unmistakeable signs of a very harsh cleaning.[​IMG][​IMG]

    But with the possible exception of the first "A" in America, there is no sign of scrubbing or scratching on the legends or bust.[​IMG][​IMG]

    i was going to ask about the scratches myself too, but i thought it was irrelovent since i was not purchasing. still think this coin is stunning. i also thought maybe it was on the case itself. has this coin been cleaned????
