Just got the results for this 1869 proof seated half dollar back from PCGS. PR genuine UNC details 94 altered surface. I kind of had a bad feeling sending it in and thought it might have had an old lacquer coat on it. I let it soak in acetone thinking maybe it would remove it but it looked exactly the same before and after. What do you think is on the surface? Thank you !
Hey! Who cares... It's a beautiful coin and you should be proud to own it. I don't know about the rest of the gang, but I like it a lot.
I believe the coin was worked on by someone trying to improve it. Several hits on the coin from poor storage and someone was trying to smooth them out. It also looks like it had a quick dip that went bad. Still a nice coin even with the problems.
Whizzed to death....sorry thats one thing that will stop me from buying a coin like this...you can see where medal has been moved...I have and will buy detailed coins....two things that makes it a no deal is whizzed or altered surfaces...as some will accept a cleaning,or a scratched surface ... but any whizzing or altered surfaces most would only buy for spot. However there's a positive side.... you learn by your mistakes....I will venture to say there not one member here who hasn't made an error as such and made a bad purchase....if they are will to admit it...I will ...I have...and I learned. We lear much better from our mistakes than we do by not making them. That may sound strange...I always say once the baby touches the hot oven door ...they now know what hot is...most likely they will stay away from a hot oven. Bright, shinning coins aren't always what one would believe them to be...now you know...dont let this discourage you.
Paddy54 you are absolutely right! I got this coin from a local small time dealer when I was just starting out collecting and it just looked really nice so I purchased it for $400. The dealer had it labeled as AU and he thought it was a business strike. I thought the price wasn't bad for how nice it looked and I thought it was a proof but I didn't know what to look for as far as problems go. I was so naive then, knowing what I know now I would have taken a better look at it and passed! As time went on and I learned more and more I started to question the surface of this coin and I had a bad feeling long before I sent it in. OUCH!!
