Ok, so I just got this coin from an auction. I paid $224 for it, and from all the research I have come up with, value is roughly $400 (lowest condition price of EF40). Now, when I receive it, I'm taking it to get verified that it is genuine, get a better idea of the grade, etc. The seller claims he won't accept returns for basically fear of getting back a fake item, which I understand. So my question on top of what you guys think of the coin, possible grade and value, if the coin is fake, what is the experience like of disputing the purchase through Ebay? I have yet to do one, and am really hoping that I don't have to cause the coin is genuine.
I can't tell you if it's real or fake, but you shouldn't buy coins only to discover they're fake and try to return it, because it won't work out every time, and then you are stuck with a shiny button
Unless you are really knowledgeable on the diagnostics of the authentic vs. the fakes for $1 and $3 gold or really really really trust your seller - I would avoid unTPG'ed stuff like the bubonic plague. There just are a lot of fakes out there, particularly the $3.
I get that, but at the same time, isn't that what buyer protection is for? It is a gamble purchasing the coin, that I know. But the old saying is always true, "hope for the best, expect the worst" and barring any complications, I'm hopeful that I came out with a great coin. Also, who buys coins, discovers they're fake, and doesn't try to make the situation right again?
I collect black box stuff, you know the stuff you know isn't Kosher - curiously I hope that stuff isn't the real Mccoy!
IIRC, the total estimated survival for the date/mint is only in the low hundreds, so its a rather scarce issue to be gambling with. That said, this is one, if not the most counterfeited year in the series, dating back to the 1950's and coming out of the middle east. Even with the poor images, I am nearly positive this is a fake.
