My coin store visit today I found this one and naturally searching through the baby busties I found a couple of those in the special boxes. At the same time I saw this puppy in the box - 1867 with rays. Have not bought one of these in a while. It has been dipped, but is starting to retone. That did not matter to me - woohoo another DDO. And on top of that it has what I think is triple RPD - I think triple because of the 186 looking repunched - then the flag of the 7 to the right of the 7. Still waffling on the grade. I am not sure of the actual variety - only a cherry pickers guide at the moment. Maybe I need to e-mail Ed. Just thought I would share a cool variety.
Wow, they really messed up that die the first time. You have to wonder what the die sinker was doing/thinking at the time. Was he in a hurry? Was he drunk? Was he inexperienced? Cool coin & thanks for sharing.
I don't think so - I went with VF30. And yes - it makes me wonder. I think the guy at the coin store mentioned smoking the wrong kind of tobacco while talking about some coin designs. When you think about the 1809's and 1812's it just amazes me what they could do.
A beautiful, and interesting, pick up Mark! :thumb: I find Shield Nickels one of the most interesting because of all the die problems they had, let alone their nice design. Delicious!
Nice coin! Only VF? really? That coin has better details then some AUs I've seen. Must be a heck of a strike! Oh, and NICE COIN!!!!!!!
I'm not sure if the date is triple punched, I think part of it is MDD, but it definitely has a VERY wide repunching. The first punching is almost a full digits width or more to the right of its final position.
It might not be, my first guess was the far right seven was one repunch then the 186 is another repunch. Look at 2.4 in the cherry pickers guide - then I based it off what I read there.
The dates on the shield nickels were punched in using a single four digit logotype punch so all four digits go as a group. That projection at the lower left corner of the 8 is, I believe, the upper left serif or flag of the 1. That feature to the upper left of the 6 is from the left side of the 8. I don't really see traces of the 6, but if the 1 and 8 are in the positions I mention that would pretty much put the traces of the right side of the 7 where we see them on your coin. I may have to retract my comment about it not being triple punched though. I still think that we are seeing MDD on the main date, but what is that up ABOVE the 1 and to the left of the ball??? It doesn't show in the whole coin image, but shows clearly in the close up of the 186 picture. It is in the wrong position to be the curl on the shield, and the shape looks to be perfect for the top of another 1. The flag and curve up the top of the 1 are clearly defined. It is looking like it may have been triple punched with two of the punching being WILDLY off, and in different directions.
