Here is an 1867 nickle That has some strong doubling on UNITED STATES on the reverse. The weight is the same as a US nickle and it is just slightly smaller in diameter than a V nickle which I believe the shield nickles were slightly smaller. It was circulated and has a fair amount of wear. What do you think.

From the look of it I am inclined to think it is double struck rather than a doubled die.

Double Struck or a true Doubled Die, it is trully strong doubling and a shame that it is not a BU specimen! However, really nice and thanks for sharing!

It is not in Cherrypickers Vol 1, not in Peters/Mohan-- guide on Shield Nickels.

It is so strong a doubling that I can't believe that it was never found/listed before.
So, logically, I'd have to guess Double strike.
But, wait for Mike to let us know.

I would almost say double struck, but I can't be sure.

Thanks for the info. Any ideas as to what the value of the coin might be?
    Thanks again for the help.

Impressive, I wish the coin was in better condition. It is not a double strike because with that much separation the fields of the coin would have flattered out much of the doubled image, yet both images seem to have roughly the same height and relief. That would be characteristic of a doubled die not a double strike. In that condition though, and considering it hasn't been seen before I would have to wonder about a contemporary counterfeit.

Looks like machine doubling to me but the coin is too worn and the pics too hard to view to be sure.
