Now here's an 1866 Three Cent Nickel that I bought several years ago. Have a look. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0021-1.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0022-1.jpg Not a scratch on the obverse but a hair. Must have fallen off my face! Good looking coin with great luster and a problem. What's the problem? clembo
Nice coin. That last 6 reminds me of the shield nickels. As a matter of fact the whole 1866 looks like it was used on shield nickels also. I wonder if the same person did both.
Like I said - must have fallen off my face. Work on the ZZTop thing every winter then trim it down in spring.
Sigh those aren't die cracks. Those are guy wires holding everything in place. :kewl: Those are cool - I only saw two at first glance. Really nice coin.
nice looking, it looks like a typical week stike and it is a little off center a bit on the obverse which makes the rim look a little funky. I also noticed the the top left of the M apears to be missing. I do like the look of the lll cent coins with lots of detail like that.
I was wondering when you'd show up viper. Here's a close up of the CA in AMERICA. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/ca.jpg
very cool, I have a couple 73 and 74,s with doubling similar to that, but not quit as pronounced. I have been so busy trying to buy 75 and 76,s I have not bought a lll cent nickel with as much detail as yours but it is on my to do list. If I ever remember to get my battery charger back from my mom,s house I will have to post some pics of some of my recent purchases. Again, very nice coin, thanks for sharing.:thumb: Love those lll,s
That looks like Longacre Doubling (not any type of "true" doubling). Is there somethig else we're missing??? I see no problems except a curious lack of luster (a scan perhaps?)....Mike
Leadfoot, The lack of luster is due to scanning - you nailed that one. I put this coin up because I bought it as a problem coin but never really could see and figured someone here might see it. I bought this coin as a "whizzed" coin. If it was they did an extraordinary job. I just wanted a nice looking example of a 3CN at the time. I paid a whopping $26 for this one. clembo
Well, you'd be surprised at how often shenanigans like 'whizzing' get by even the most numismatically minded... Especially when all you have to go by are two pictures... Ben
Not with the naked eye and I also have gone over this coin countless times with a 16x loupe and am pressed to find any signs. I know that Ben but it's also why I posted this. I figure I've seen tons of coins here on CT where someone is immediately saying a coin is cleaned by looking at pictures no better than mine. Soooo... I put one up that I bought as cleaned, state that it has a problem and all I get is "nice coin". Not saying that's a problem I just find it odd. Now I'm even more confused. clembo
Problems sometimes show up in pics and sometimes they don't. But if you have the coin in hand and can't see them while turning the coin in the light then there may not be any problems. It could be that whoever sold you the coin as a problem coin was wrong, or else they saw something that you do not.
Guess I'll never know for sure unless I decide to slab it and I won't. I bought this on ebay several years ago. The seller made it VERY clear that he felt it was whizzed. Hence the low price and I'm glad I got it. Very nice in hand.
I don't either, but can't say for sure. I've seen some VERY deceptive whizzing on nickel before. Methinks the hard metal makes it more difficult to detect, but I'm not sure having never attempted it myself...MIke
