    Good evening folks.

As always I have a question and am looking for you alls input.

Are there any known major varieties of the 1866 shield nickel with rays? I have one that exhibits doubling on almost everything from the top of the coin down to the bottom, all on the obverse.

Anyone have a reference to look this up. I mean there is quite a bit of doubling going on and I don't even know if its a true double-die or mechanical doubling. It is below almost all of the devices starting with O & D from God, below all the shield elements, and the 6s in the date.

    Any opinions?

There are a lot of varieties for 1866. To me most looks like mechanical doubling - except for the 66's - and those I am not sure about. Lots of re-punched dates for that year. There is nothing in the cherry pickers guide that looks like it and I have never tried the tool you can get on shieldnickels.net.
