Hey all! I recently bought thid 1865 Three Cent Piece, noticing the kewl cuds and errors. It was brought to my attention that the coin was a bit "weird" looking, as for the distortion of coin, the space from rim, the actual rim, etc.... My question; is this a counterfeit? Thanks everyone, and all other comments are most certainly welcome! :hammer: --- Ryan ---
Well, I half agree with Greyford. Yes, die clashes on 3 cent pieces are common. And, yes, I see the die clash between the head and the "MERICA". However, the marks over the date, over the hair, and thru the "ICA" are more likely a die crack. Also, the one from the E in America to the rim is also a die crack, especially since it does not match any reverse designs. Possibly a die crack from the severe die clash.
I agree with Frank on this, little doubt it is real. I would like to see a close up of the date if it is possible. I can't tell if there is a slight repunch of the 6 and 5. Nice coin for those of us that like such. This group often are slightly off center, producing the uneven rims. Jim
It also looks to be a very late die state, most of the ribbon on the lower reverse has been polished away. I like the die cracks though. :thumb:
Frank has this one nailed. Nice clash and LDS coin. I bet that die didn't make to many more hits before it blew up.
