I simply could not pass this one up. This is my newest addition to the growing herd of Kingdom of Hannover coins from 1815-1866 featuring the Saxon Steed. I'm such a fan of this design! There is something quite graceful about this rearing steed, which has been featured on coins at least back to the 1690s from Brunswick-Luneberg and Brunswick-Wolfenbutel. This 1865 issue is one of the last from the "Kingdom of Hannover", as in 1866 Prussia conquered/annexed the Kingdom of Hannover in the Austro-Prussian War, and eventually Germany was unified in 1871. This same rearing horse can still be found today on the flag of the State of Lower Saxony. This coin has a beautiful strong strike and booming luster. I may try to buff up the slab a bit and take another set of pics sometime, but for now here is my new beauty!
