Got this coin a long time ago. I started my collection with inherited coins and circ finds. This was the first Raw coin I bought back then. Posted it up for opinions with terrible pics and wrote it off as being cleaned. Came across it and decided to get a new opinion on it with better pics. Does show evidence of it being weakly struck. XF grade? Cleaned? And now some details
Nice heavy obv die clash. Rev: No clash. So the mint must have changed the reverse die to polish it to remove the marks, and replaced it with another die.
Congrats on a great looking coin! Most normal people are ready to admit just about ALL coins of this age have been "cleaned" at least once in their lives or we wouldn't want to touch them!.....
Nice looking coin Three cent nickels are another series I collect . Your coin looks to be an xf specimen . And now for the better news! It's a rpd! With evidence of the 65 under the larger 65. Notice the 65 is larger than the 18. Take a look at your images #1 & 4 enlarge them. You'll see the 6 and 5 under the larger numbers . Now there are several 1865 rpd's in cherry picker guide. This one is not listed! Meaning if you have it attributed you will get the credit for the find. And yes the obv, clash nice coin with plenty of meat on the bone
Here I marked the areas in question. One the 5 the top of the secondary 5 flag as well as the lower areas of the 5 can be seen as the red arrows point out. The top of the secondary 6 as well as the bottom and the secondary 6 closing the area in the primary 6.. I'm quite sure the 1 and 8 are repunched also, due to the dirt I can't make out for sure. However if you look at the lower loop of the 8 at 7 K you'll notice a mass. as well as the foot of the primary one inside right at the base. I also question the denticles for a MPD as these are also known for this series and date. Due to the MD the areas in question are to blurred. Very cool find!
Paddy, thanks for the info. On Monday, I can take some better pics under the scope of the areas in question and see if I can get some clearer shots. I wasn't at full magnification and didn't think to zoom in on the date. I definitely see what you are seeing now. I'll also get some clearer shots of denticles Any other areas to focus on? Definitely not what I was expecting between the RPD and clash. I think I paid $20 for this coin 10 years ago, posted a few blurry pics and then haven't looked at it since.
This is another for the most part over looked series . Yes they can get pricey for the lower mintage's. But again not given the respect as other series gets.
Some more pics at 64X It's tough to capture on camera, but the "65" do have a mass of some sort within that is raised up. I can sort of see what you are saying about a secondary 5, but missing out on the 6 Shot of the "18" a tad blurry, I'll update later
Excellent. Well I wasn't really expecting this sort of discovered. Definitely learned a few things in my research in terms of what to look for on coins I find. So, what would you do with this coin?
I would keep it. It's a nice example of a repunched date . Plus it's clashed. I like the wood toned reverse . I always suggest to revisit coins not looked at for a while as you may find some treasures .
I'm not seeing a repunched date. I'm seeing a heavily worn die that has clashed and been heavily repolished and clashed again. I suspect what you are seeing in the date is result of the die wear. Note the heavy die flow lines and distorted denticals in the date area.
