    Hey all! :)

I recently bought an 1864 2 Cent Piece (with the date being doubled!), and just wanted to share it! All comments are welcome :)

Nice coin but the corrosion does knock the grade down. I'd net it to about a VF30.

About a $30 coin to me.

Nice repunched date but fairly common in the 64LM especially. Really doesn't affect the value.

it appears to have quite a bit of corrosion, even though it is quite the highgrade coin.

Would it be better to try and stop the corrosion , or has it ran its course ?

What is a safe way to take off the corrosion?

I think the corrosion has already been stopped but when you get it in, take better pics and re-post it so we can see if it is still ongoing or did someone already neutralize it? :)

    Ribbit :)

Ps: There are several ways to remove corrosion and it depends on how deep it is, as to what's the best method to use, unless you have a couple of years you can wait (deep corrosion & olive oil)?

You have to remove it then treat the coin so the corrosion doesn't come back. I use olive oil (potpourri pot or ultrasonic cleaner) and they make some kind of corrosion inhibiter, I just don't know what it's called? The main thing is to remove all the active corrosion and then to keep moisture away from the coin.

What about hydrogenperoxide , or aceatone ?

Acetone is used to remove crud, not corrosion, and I don't think peroxide will do anything to corrosion. It usually takes an acid of some sort to remove the corrosion and virgin olive oil is acidic but I have used vinegar on real bad corrosion but you have to be on top of it to make sure it doesn't hurt the coin. With olive oil, it can take months of soaking to get it off, so it's hard to hurt the coin.

Ps: Electrolysis can also be used but it always depends on how bad the corrosion is. With Ryan's coin, the bulk of the corrosion is gone, if not all of it, so what may be left can probably be removed with a soak in olive oil for a few months or a few minutes of electrolysis. :)

You can't remove corrosion, you can only remove the substance that is causing the corrosion. And once that substance is removed, the corrosion stops. Corrosion is the damage that has been done to the metal and once it is done it done forever and cannot be undone.

The corroding substance is gone Ryan, there is nothing you can do at this point. Just leave it alone.

I did as well, about three weeks ago on ebay. My coin has the 6 and 4 doubled in the date. Same with you?
