I have an 1864 Two cent piece with a repunched date, Is it worth anything or what. I paid $20 for it at F-12 or maybe scratching barely past VF
With many of the older coins it is sometimes harder to find one that is NOT a variety or error than it is to find one that is. So these varieties seldom add much value. Can you post a pic ?
my scanner is on the fritz=( the repunch is very prominent in the four and the condition is F-12 as stated before. If that helps.
The answer isn't in the Cherrypickers' Guide - I looked. But perhaps this will help - here is a link to the same coin you asked about, slabbed by ANACS as MS63 Brown - Click Here Now this coin, with the repunched date, didn't even sell at a starting bid of $119. Here is another link to a coin of the same date, without the repunched date, slabbed by ANACS as MS63 Red/Brown - Click Here This coin did sell, for $150. Now - this doesn't really prove anything, especially considering that the coin you asked about was graded F12. But what it does do is show the relationship between the value of the coin with the RPD and without. The one coin likely brought a higher price more because of the Red/Brown designation than anything. But if the RPD really made a difference - the coin would have sold considering it was priced $30 less than the coin without the RPD. The bottom line is that there is not that much demand for 2 cent pieces - they just aren't popular. And if there is little demand for the regular coins - there is little demand for the varieties as well.
yeah, i guess so. its still a cool coin and im sure with my luck demand will skyrocket after i sell it for a miniscule amount...or die. thanx -James. P.S what about an 1853 three cent piece.
I checked on ebay - there's not really a recently sold coin there in what I would consider F12. But you can look here ecoin prices - They're a little high sometimes but they can give you a pretty good idea of value.
Thanx for that link alot. I really dont agree with the grades ny deaker gave these coins, i would say VF at least. My scanner will be working again soon, then i can show u the real quality.
Good luck on telling which Variety you have! I have found it extremely difficult to tell a "Small Motto" from a "Large Motto" on an 1864 Two Cent piece in Fine or even Very Fine condition as they almost always seem to wear harder and first on the Motto! Frank
