1864 (no L) DDR???? Please Help I Cannot Identify First off, my wife broke my laptop and I lost everything, including my E-Mail and passwords, so that is why I havent been on in two months, but I got a new lap top and im back on... Somone help me with this one... I had this coin for a while now, I was going to sell it, but when I looked at it closely I noticed doubling on the (Reverse). The shield is clearly doubled and the front side of "One Cent" is doubled, on the "C", "E", & the "O", as mentioned before there is undeniable doubling on the shield. Also there is a nice die crack on the revverse, which makes me think there has to be a couple more out there. Well I searched all I know how and I can't find this coin anywhere. I have included pictures so you might be able to help me, Is it an FS-101 that is know? Is it a Snow Cent? Help Me Out Guys!!!!!! -Stella
Stella, I searched all my books and your right no coin as such listed. Maybe a new find? The coin is raw correct? Maybe you should send it out nice looking 64 for sure be nicer if it came back as a newbie. Good Luck Paddy
The best person to talk to is Rick Snow at http://www.indiancent.com/. Nice guy and I am sure he will help you.
Machine doubling. The shelf like look on the left of the devices. If it were a doubled die it would be rounded like the devices that the hub would have copied.
I give Rick a shout... it maybe what coop said maybe not. No matter what I still hold on to it it's a nice coin for sure.
Looks like a pretty nice 1864 copper nickel but the doubling looks like machine doubling to me too, nothing really special. And die breaks are pretty common on that year as well. Unless there are hairlines which I can't see from the photos, that coin looks like it might grade MS64 or MS65 - I would send it in for grading. 1864 copper nickels are popular for type set collectors, as well as Indian cent collectors. Very nice coin Stella!
I copied and pasted the pics to my' PC and zoomed in to 200% and can say with 99.9% surety that the doubling is from Machine Doubling! Overall, a nice IHC with a Die Crack on the Reverse and MAD Error on the Obverse. It will probably grade at MS-64 if the color is RD or RB and has not been cleaned! Frank
It's called Longacre Doubling. Very common for IHC. I have several of them. Not a double die. I agree with Huntsman, otherwise
By the way, copper nickel cents (1857-1864) are not designated as red or red brown since they contain nickel - they are a golden tan color in unc, or darker tan as they tone. If they have been cleaned, they are a brighter/whiter tan color (they have sometimes been called the "white cent" for that reason). Also, copper nickel cents are much thicker than the later bronze cents.
Stella: Can you post larger pictures. As far as strike doubling: Possible, but the normal flat shelf like appearance is questionable; 2) As far as Longacre doubling: Probably not, that is normally on both sides of the design, and looks almost like an out line. As far as what it is: Open to discussion at this time.
I have to agree with those calling it Longacre Doubling. :thumb: I can see even more doubling, all over the place, and LD fits. Nice IHC! hya: Ribbit
.......i, too, believe it to be machine doubling. here is an informative site on doubling. http://www.geocities.com/NCADD/educational1.html
Mechanical doubling on the sheild and the "C" in cent - "E" in cent is not mechanical doubling. Look at the lower left serif - probably fading Longacre doubling.
Guess you decided to sell it... for a rather large loss! http://cgi.ebay.com/1864-Indian-Head...3A1%7C294%3A50
