Hello there! I recently purchased a small lot of silver coins, and among them was a pretty decent condition (hairlines visible) New Brunswick 1864 5 Cent silver coin. I'm not an expert by any means on foreign coins, and only bought it as silver scrap, but after checking online, it appears it could be a semi-key date coin. I believe it's the small-6 variety. It doesn't appear to have ever been cleaned and has nice details remaining. I've currently got it in a plastic holder instead of in my silver stash where the other coins of the lot went.

Can include photos if needed, but just wanted to know if this coin was in fact valuable, or were the ones online I saw just special types? I couldn't find too much information on the coin after a preliminary Google search. Any help appreciated.

Pictures are really necessary for anyone here to be of much help to you. If you can post some that would be great!

I'll get photos here in a minute. My main question was is this coin (as a general coin; not my specific coin, but this date and variety as a whole) a rare coin at all? I couldn't find any type of mintage or anything. Getting photos now.

    Description:
    Obverse: Laureate head left
Obverse Legend: VICTORIA D: G: REG: / NEW BRUNSWICK
Reverse: Denomination and date within wreath, crown above

    Composition: Silver
    Fineness: 0.9250 (Sterling)
    Weight: 1.1619g
    ASW: 0.0346oz

The price guide says about the same for the 1864 5-cent piece with either the small 6 or large 6 varieties. It is a low mintage issue, with 100,000 pieces listed as the mintage. The melt is about $1.50 for the coin, but the numismatic value of the coin is about $70 in VG8 condition, around $200 in VF20, $600 in XF40, and much higher values for uncirculated pieces.

Good to know! So it isn't particular rare, though definitely not a common coin. I've got a photo now, just uploading/resizing it for posting. Check back in about 5 minutes.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about the series as a whole for this issue, but 100,000 coins minted is a small number if most were released for circulation. It's definitely worth more numismatically than it is for "melt". ;)

Sorry for the delay; I had a bit of trouble getting these resized. They are attached below. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Good deal. I'm probably going to throw it up on eBay for $100.00 buy it now and take the first offer of $75.00 or more. Thanks guys!

Sounds reasonable. I don't collect that series, but if it is a key or semi-key it will likely be snagged by someone who collects this series.
