I have a question regarding the 1864 Liberty Seated Dollar. Is it possible any of these coins have a rotated die? I saw one that had a good 45 degree rotation on the reverse when compared to the obverse. I'm thinking it's a counterfeit. I did some research and found an 1846-O and 1870-CC that had been verified as rotated (PCGS/NGC). I failed to find a single graded example of an 1864 (heritage, eBay, google). Any help/links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, S
My understanding is that rotated dies on 19th century coins are quite common. Just the fact that there are no rotated examples of that particular date in auction records would not make the coin a counterfeit. However, you may want to post a picture as of course there are other factors that could point to a counterfeit. I'm sure there are plenty of knowledgeable people on this forum who would offer opinions.
It happened especially on earlier stuff a modern counterfeit likely wouldn't have a rotated die either pics would tell a lot
Got a scan of the coin. I'm 99.9% sure it's counterfeit. I'll put the weight on later, but it seems lighter than it should be. Sorry for the scan, my scanner cut part of it off. Passes the magnet test, but that doesn't say much.
