Hi there, Does this 1864 Indian Head cent* have a pointy or rounded bust? I’m trying to figure out if it is an 1864 L, but as you can see, this cent has seen better days. I’m guessing it would be rated “good”. Anyway, I understand that if the bust is pointy, not rounded, it would have at one time bared an "L" for Longacre, before it was worn away. So...your opinion please-- is it pointy, or rounded? *I found the coin in a roll of cents from the bank--of all places!
I think the rounded/pointy distinction was for 1860 coins. The "L" you're referencing is to the left of the ribbon on the obverse; up on a diagonal between the 1st and 2nd diamonds. The variety is "L" or "No L."
There are three versions for 1864 - CUNI, Bronze no-l and Bronze with L. The bronze with L has a narrow bust point similiar to the 1859(pointy in this case) - this can be used to attribute the with L bronze cents even when the L is worn off.
Thanks Swish, Maek, Searcher, Borgovan, Bgcoins for your advice. No matter what the value, it made me happy just to find it. Anyone care to speculate on how it ended up in a penny roll?
I've sold many rolls that I put a low grade IHC in a roll. Its just a little surprise to someone wh isn't expecting it.
Hello I was reading posts on the 1864 L and was wondering if you have knowledge of an 1890 indian head with L it's in the exact place where the L is located on 1864.
All Indian Head cents after the 1864 had the L . The majority of the 1864 cents did not have the L so they are less expensive in comparison, so all 1890 will have the L on it in the same position. Welcome to the forum.
