Looking for opinions on the grade and value. I'm thinkin AU-55 details (cleaned) and $75. FYI, that is a hair (?) on the chin & field, and under the L in Liberty.
Scans were great many years ago, but today not so much (or at all). If this is a possible purchase, I would think twice about placing too much weight into what you see. If this is a coin you own and are looking to sell, I would respectfully suggest trying to photograph instead.
The obverse looks to be in worn condition everywhere except the word "LIBERTY" - the surfaces (both Obverse and Reverse) look granular and not smooth as a minted coin - Fake casting from Alibaba? (or however you spell that website where they sell fake coins!!) Hope you are asking before buying!!
I originally was thinking about the edge damage or it just don't look right between 5 & 7 o'clock & the carbon deposits (?) Obv "OF AMER" also the Obv just don't look right, the patina (in ancient terminology) isn't as it should be for normal wear. The reverse at this point I'm not gonna waste my time. I'd pass on this one.
Forgive me, I meant your belief that it was cleaned and AU55, not at the cost you quoted. I don't purchase problem coins anymore (knowingly at least) so I would advise passing.
Believe it or not - this is where @Insider should come in!!' Unless he's laughing so hard he can't type!!
Haha, probably because I'll never be able to afford a flowing hair silver dollar in XF+ unless it has a problem
The more reason to go ancient. I won't part with my moderns, I add some still periodically. 1800''s silver although nice but as far as a complete collection I don't think I have enough life left to obtain such a goal.
The amount of 'dirt' left on the F and first A in 'Of America', as well as on the upper arrow tip on the reverse, lend to my belief that it is genuine. I agree that the surface seems a little granular, not smooth, which could be an effect of the cleaning. Pocket piece?
IMO, the coin is genuine. In the photos it looks like a CORRODED AU. Check out the reverse fields esp. Need sharp image.
Let's wait for sharp photos. The color is good, very little rub = AU-55 to 58 depending on the surface. Don't like wavy, cratered surface. I'm not near a price guide but $75 if not corroded seems OK. Note change of color in field in front of face. Dark in the middle, lighter around relief. Coin may be cleaned too much and photo has fooled me.
