I'm looking to see how common my coin is. I have a 1864 2c in XF condition, so it has some nice detail to it. It is rotated, either 90 or 270 degrees, I'm not sure which. I've found several of them rotated slightly, and a few 180s, but I haven't seen any others like this one. How common are they?
hello, welcome to the forum, I was hoping that someone more knowledgable about die errors would answer this for you, but they haven't so I will. The short answer is that it is not all that common, but I'll give the long answer too. If this coin was a modern coin (20th or 21st century) then it would be quite rare as quality control at the mint is quite good, but during the 18th and 19th centuries it wasn't quite so good so rotated dies were more common then. Generally, people who collect rotated die coins pay the best premiums for coins that are rotated 90 to 270 degrees, but finding the right buyer may be a challenge. Assuming you have the more common of the 2 1864 varieties I'd estimate it's value at about $50, give or take.
