Frank. Dumb question here from the peanut gallery. You stated attempted hole. Does it have to be all the way through to be considered a hole? If so what is this a crater? : ) My day to give our resident author a hard time.. PS.. I agree with the VG Grade but damaged and Large Motto or Letters.
Since we don't know what was on the perpetrator's mind, we don't know if it was an attempted hole or not By the way, I guess technically, a hold need not go through to the other side in order to qualify as such. But in coin lingo, unless the other side is breached, it is usually called damage, a depression, a dig, a crater, whatever.
using Webster's dictionary: Hole: an opening that is from one side to the other. [actually I made that up.] Still, are you really asking this question, or just breaking my chops?
Probably. But even for the crime of attempted holing, the perp should still get 20 to Life. After all, this is an 1864 2C.
I would grade it "JUNK BOX". Still, that's a great coin to give to a youngster and maybe create a numismatist!
