I think there might be a nice looking coin underneath all this corrision/crude (don't know what it is). Anything I should try on this coin such as an acetone bath or is that only for silver coins. Any suggestions would be appreicated.
Thanks guy. That's what I thought but wanted to confirm . Too bad since there looks like some nice detail buried down there somewhere. Have a good night!
It's a shame sometimes how a nice coin gets ruined. I once bought a beautiful, chocolate brown 1873 closed 3 variety Indian Cent in solid VF-30 condition. However, someone had decided to use it as a button and had placed two holes right through the coin. I bought it for $1 because I though it was a neat looking piece.
The coin suffers from heavy corrosion and there's not much you can do about it. I would not recommend trying to clean it because then you will loose the natural toning of the copper (and the coin will still look pourus). It is a coin that obviously has spent a long time in the ground and the acid from the soil has eaten away much of the surface. It is what it is.
That was one great buy for a buck! And Gopher I will probably just play around and experiment with this coin to see what happens. I know that coin is to far gone to be of any help.
Want some good advice of cleaning corroded coppers? Ketchup will get rid of every last bit of the corrsosion, soak it in it for a few days, you'll see. It will make it bright though.
yeah all that acid in the ketchup will eat right through that corrosion, sorry but that coin needs last rites
Flyers10,better offload it by putting it back in circulation.I'm sure that some kid will have fun finding it in their change. Aidan.
