About 6 months ago I bought a lot of Indian head cents for way less than their retail value. I put them aside and ignored them. Today I was creating pictures for my inventory and came across this. It has a 90° rotational error. I have absolutely no idea if this is anything unusual or not, or what it may be worth. Does anyone have any ideas?
I did a quick search and did come up with this, just to give you some info on it. Not about pricing however..http://www.error-ref.com/rotated_die_error/ and I agree, That is cool!
Look where the light and the shadow is on the photos. Looks like a rotated photo to me. Exactly 90 degrees?
So? What are you trying to say? It is a rotated photo. I scanned in it and did not even notice it was rotated at first because I just put the coin in there and scanned it. Then when I scanned the other side I oriented it so that the reverse was as I expected it to be. It was not until I took it out that I noticed the error. So I then rotated the scan. And yes, almost exactly 90°, although I did not try to measure it exactly.
Here is a page on rotated die errors http://rotateddies.50webs.com/census.htm I don't see your listed , Very Cool !
I have no experience with these things. If it is not listed does that mean that it is previous unknown, maybe even unique? Or is there more chance that it is a fake? Any idea what errors such as this sell for if genuine? Because I would be more interested in selling it, maybe on EBay, and getting more coins in its place, than I would be in keeping it and probably never looking at it again. I did find this one on EBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/006-1863-Ro...398955?hash=item33cab8296b:g:SrwAAOSweW5VdQe6 But it apparently did not sell after being offered for $59. But it was only about a 30 degree rotation and not graded as highly. There is also this one currently listed for $106 which is far inferior condition: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1869-Indian...r-VERY-RARE-/352019402937?hash=item51f5fdd0b9 On the other hand there is one offered for $19.99, with only about a 25 to 30 degree rotation. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1864-Bronze...US-Coin-429-/201787270933?hash=item2efb756715
