I just picked up my raw 1862 Legal Tender that I won on a BK auction and have serious concerns on whether it is real or not. The paper quality is more like tissue paper than what I'm used to. The paper doesn't look as I would expect and it certainly doesn't feel right. I know that you can't determine the paper quality from a photograph, but anyone with more experience in this series might be able to tell me something. Any help is appreciated, @SteveInTampa, @mpcusa, ?. I do plan on sending it to PMG but I am waiting for other raw notes to arrive.
Steve dont keep us in suspence.....your the expert on paper...but im thinking it isnt real ,though ive had old paper as thin as tissue. From a guick glannce looks kosher....but studied is a different story.
The note is over 150 years old and appears to have been improved. Washing and pressing along with general circulation takes a toll on the paper. I sent additional information (name & email) to @Mountain Man to help determine authenticity. The engraving and scroll work appear to be genuine. Comparison between a Gem note and the OP’s note. Notice the wear on the OP’s note along with the color loss.
I received information from one of Steve's friends and he authenticated it as real, but having had work done to it. Thanks to @SteveInTampa and Rob.
Inquiring minds ya know... i sold a $5 buffalo note for my wifes uncle. In fact i sold quite a bit of stuff he had from his hardware store. I was shocked as yes i truly love to have one....its a cool note...very Americana...but it was like tissue....an it still sold at 350. I coulnt believe it.
This is why I buy pre-graded notes. I just feel it's better to be safe than sorry. I like that note by the way.
