I know the difference between Fr. 41 and Fr. 41a is whether the left edge has National Bank Note Co. NY or American Bank Note Co. New York on it.

But what is Fr. 41b and 41c?

I saw a couple of 41c notes on HA, but couldn't figure out what the difference is.

There's also an Fr. 41d, but no known notes as far as I can tell.

    Thanks!

Color variations in the ink? Are there any differences to the back?

I'm not quite sure. And frankly none of the reference books I have talk about 41b or 41c. Only one mentions 41a and cites the difference in my first post.

Here are the backs. Same order as above.

Hmm... from what I can see, it looks like 41b and 41c don't have a plate number left of the portrait. I wonder if that's the distinguishing characteristic. I'm not sure what the difference between 41b and 41c is, however.

    In order of production:

41b: Original seal. The background of the central circle, behind the shield, is solid red rather than spokes. Very few of these were printed, all early in Series 1. No face plate number.
41c: Normal seal (spokes), no face plate number. All of these are in Series 1 and 2.
41d: Same as 41c but with inverted seal (error). All observed examples are in Series 1. Don't ask me why an error gets its own catalog number....
41a: Normal seal (spokes), face plate number present. These come in Series 3 through 88.

All of the above have National/American imprints. Then comes...

41: National/National imprints, otherwise like 41a. These come in Series 88 through 171.

    Clear as mud?

Why yes. How come I don't see any 41d's in the track & price census? How can it even get a friedberg number without any known examples?

I want to request 41e be assigned to the elusive engraving error where Hamilton has a clarinet in his nose. Unfortunately no examples have survived.

There are only three known Fr-41d notes listed in the Gengerke census, all reported by Doug Murray. As far as I know, none have yet made it to public auction. Doug had an excellent display in Memphis a few years ago that showed the difference in these notes.

I HAD a complete Friedberg set of Legal Tender deuces completed in 2007, then these new Fr numbers came out out, so I've been looking for a while.
