Hey Coin Talk! I need your assistance here. Is this a true 1861 $20 confederate issued note or a counterfeit/fake? Its has a couple of odd markings that make me seem to believe its not the real deal holyfield. Here's what is causing me some concerns. It says "(second series)" in the lower right corner & also there seems to be more decorative markings around the ship than the other notes of the same that I can locate photos & info on. It also states in smaller print on the bottom of the center "JT Paterson Columbia S.C.", which as far I can research of was not a engraver/producer of this particular note. Any insight anybody has here would be of help. Im leaning towards this note being a fake or a counterfeit, I just need some confirmation. Also so the reverse is blank. Thanks...
According to the book Confederate States Paper Money, JT Paterson in Columbia SC was one of two printers of these notes. The book also indicates there were 32 different varieties of this note with the differences being the flourishes between the words Confederate and States.
From my book it seems geniune as well. I didn't notice anything that showed this note as being a common reproduction.
