I was fortunate to get permission to metal detect some property that borders Shiloh National Military Park. I found some nice Civil War bullets and other various relics, but I also found this 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. I think it has XF/AU details but unfortunately it has some ground action and corrosion. I was wondering how the damage would impact the grading and value of the coin. Thanks.
It has a wonderful chocolate tone. Do you have papers verifing that it was dug up at Shiloh ??? It looks fine to me. AU 55 easy. Congrads.
Though this is a kewl find, and a rare one at that with only 77,000 ever minted that year, unfortunately you would be wasting your submission fees to send that in. It would get either DETAILS, or DAMAGED labels.
I found yesterday (St Patrick's Day). I don't have any papers, but I do have 2 witnesses. I don't know what kind of papers I could get for it. I added a pictore of all my finds.
God, the killing fields of Shiloh. Be nice to have your friends write up a note, saying where and when you found these, for future archeologist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgLUmiRLqW8
I use a 20 year old White's Eagle Spectrum. I bought it used about 3 years ago and it has been very good to me. Here are some of my other finds with this detector.
