I have a 1858/7 Flying Eagle Cent. Parts of the 7 can be seen underneath/around the "8" which is the obvious marker/identifier. However, I read that there are other markers that can be used as well. Does anyone know all the things to look for when trying to authenticate the coin as a "8/7" variety? I ask because I am looking to sell the coin so I want to provide as much evidence as possible to potential buyers. I will probably be sending it for grading/authentication through PCGS or NGC but would like to check through everything on my own before paying for grading. Thanks!
I'm pretty sure all of the 1858/7 coins have a small die chip (small raised dot) in the field just about halfway between the date and the bottom of the eagle.
Thanks! On another site I also found that a misplaced 1 between the date and the eagle (probably similar to what you said with the die chip) or a broken wing tip are also potential indicators.
actually, the dot is a remnant of a 1 punched in the field. also, the die used to create the overdate coins has a broken wing tip on the right wing.
