I picked this up recently, and started to look at it closer. Noticed there is some doubling on different parts of the coin. I know there is a dd for this year. Any one know anything about it?:hatch:
I am not seeing anything major in these pictures. Several of the die varieties for this date involve the eagle's eye. Can you post a clear shot of that? Thanks, Bill
one more thing.. I got this from someone selling the same coin. Does it not look like the same markings?
The coin in post #7 looks like a doubled die. The upper left portion of the I and then the A indicates that to me. The C is also a part of the doubling but the real indications are on the I and A. The first coin does not have anything on the EYE and does not appear to be a doubled die at least as far as that part of the coin. If the first coin in the thread has that same little feature on the upper part of the I of AMERICA, then that coin could be a doubled die. You don't show any pictures of that. There may be something to the left of the A on the first coin that matches up with the second coin but the picture of the first coin is not that clear. Thanks, Bill
Hello All. Just passing through and spotted this thread so I thought I would provide an answer. The coin is a well known doubled die. Not positive of the number as I cannot see enough of the coin in these images. There are around 10 different but very similar doubled dies on the 1857 Flying Eagle cent. About half of them are in the Cherrypickers' Guide. The rest are in Rick Snow's Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide, Volume I, 1856-1858. Just use either of those references and I believe you will find it easy enough to attribute. Cheers! Mike Ellis
