Here is an 1857 Flying Eagle Cent Graded by NTC. Please let me know what you think the grade is and tell me if you think it is a double die obv. Thanks Tom
tdec1000, I believe that it will grade out at F-15! There is a little too much wear on the Eagle's tail and the Reverse to grade at VF-20. I can see some doubling on the Date...especially on the "7" but can't make out any other doubling. You might try cropping the pictures a little more which should help in making the pictures of the coin a little bigger. Frank
Tom: There are five listed double die obverses listed by Richard Snow. Two, S-4 and S-15 show doubling on the eagle's eye. The others show minor doubling in United, America and (#3)= Uni and Stat. None of the doubling is visable in a photo like the one that you show, you would have to use microphotographs to show the doubling. Frank: I can't see the doubling on the date that you mention, but if it is there, it would not be a part of the doubled die, since the date was punched in separately on each die and not part of the original die preparation. The date 'doubling' would be a repunched date. This is not to say that it is not repunched, but Snow does not list one, but, I have found repunched dates in different series that are not listed in any reference books. The Other Frank
I'm not that good at grading FE Cents but I think F sounds about right. As for the DD I can't see the detail large enough to tell. Speedy
I definitely think it grades at VF-20, possibly VF-30. There are too many details left on the eagles head, and breast for me to really consider F-12 an option. The rims and denticles are also very nice (too nice for fine).
With a second look I am going to lean heavily toward VF-20 because of the minor nicks on the reverse and uneven wearing on the obverse.
I would tend to lean toward a VF 20 on the coin. The front of the coin has a pleasant looking wear to it. The back, though doesn't quite have the same eye appeal of the front. The pics aren't close enough for me to distinguish any doubling. What grade did NTC give it???
They graded it a VF-30 . I believe it is a ddo. I will post pictures soon. The coin looks a lot better in hand than the photos suggest.
